Apple Loses Top Spot in Smartphone Sales in China, Falls to Third Place in 2024

Apple has lost its position as the top smartphone seller in China, falling to third place in 2024, according to a new market analysis. The shift marks a significant change in the competitive landscape of the world’s largest smartphone market.

Domestic brands Huawei and Oppo have surpassed Apple in sales, fueled by strong demand for their latest flagship devices and competitive pricing. Huawei, in particular, has regained market share with its innovative hardware and software features, cementing its comeback following years of challenges due to U.S. sanctions.

“Chinese consumers are increasingly favoring local brands that deliver high-quality products tailored to their preferences,” said an industry analyst. “Huawei and Oppo have successfully leveraged this sentiment while offering cutting-edge technology at competitive prices.”

Apple’s decline in rankings is attributed to multiple factors, including increased competition, economic pressures, and evolving consumer preferences. Analysts also point to the relatively high prices of Apple devices, which may have deterred budget-conscious buyers in China’s slowing economy.

Despite the setback, Apple continues to maintain a strong presence in the premium smartphone segment, with the iPhone 15 series reportedly performing well among affluent consumers. The company has also highlighted its robust ecosystem, which keeps many users loyal to its brand.

In response to the competition, Apple is expected to double down on its efforts to appeal to the Chinese market, potentially introducing localized features and strategies to regain its footing.
