Ukraine’s top military commander has reported a significant reduction in Russia’s artillery ammunition usage, attributing the decline to recent Ukrainian strikes targeting Russian production lines and ammunition depots. The announcement underscores the impact of Kyiv’s ongoing efforts to weaken Moscow’s logistical capabilities in the ongoing war.

In a statement, Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said, “Our targeted strikes on Russia’s ammunition depots and production facilities have disrupted their ability to sustain high levels of artillery fire. This has led to a noticeable reduction—almost by half—in their usage of artillery on the battlefield.”
Straining Russia’s Firepower
Artillery has been a cornerstone of Russia’s military strategy, particularly in the grinding battles along the eastern and southern fronts. However, Ukraine’s focus on dismantling supply chains and production capabilities appears to be yielding results. Recent strikes using Western-supplied precision weaponry, including HIMARS rocket systems and long-range drones, have reportedly destroyed key facilities crucial to Russia’s ammunition supply.
The reduction in artillery usage could have a significant impact on the battlefield dynamics, as artillery fire has been pivotal in Russia’s attempts to hold captured territories and repel Ukrainian counteroffensives.
Broader Implications
While Ukrainian officials have celebrated the development, analysts caution that it may be a temporary setback for Russia. Moscow has historically adapted to logistical challenges by leveraging existing stockpiles and finding alternative supply routes.
Western intelligence sources also suggest that Russia may be turning to foreign suppliers, including North Korea and Iran, to replenish its dwindling ammunition reserves. The reduction in artillery usage could therefore reflect an interim adjustment rather than a long-term constraint.
Ukraine’s Strategic Focus
Ukraine has made targeting Russia’s supply lines a priority, aiming to weaken its adversary’s operational capacity. Recent successes include strikes on major ammunition depots in Crimea and behind Russian frontlines in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Zaluzhnyi emphasized that continued international support is crucial for sustaining this strategy. “The assistance from our allies, particularly in providing advanced weaponry and intelligence, remains essential in our fight to reclaim our territory,” he added.
