Federal agents are investigating the fatal shooting of a Border Patrol agent in Vermont.

Federal authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into the tragic fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent near Coventry, Vermont, approximately 20 miles south of the Canadian border. The incident occurred on the afternoon of January 20, 2025, along Interstate 91, shaking the law enforcement community and raising questions about the circumstances leading to the loss of life.

According to initial reports, the Border Patrol agent, who was assigned to the Swanton Sector, was engaged in routine duties near the border when the incident unfolded. The agent was fatally shot during an encounter that involved two suspects. One of the suspects was killed at the scene, while the other sustained injuries and is currently in custody. The names of the agent and the suspects have not yet been released as the investigation continues.

The FBI’s Albany office, in conjunction with the Vermont State Police, is leading the investigation. Authorities are working to piece together the sequence of events, gather evidence, and determine the motives behind the shooting. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman issued a statement expressing his sorrow over the loss of the agent and assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

“This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks our Border Patrol agents face every day in their mission to protect this nation,” Huffman said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen agent, and we will ensure that justice is served.”

The incident prompted a temporary closure of a section of Interstate 91 as law enforcement secured the scene and conducted initial inquiries. Authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to public safety, but the community remains on edge as details of the case unfold.

Lawmakers from Vermont, including Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Peter Welch, and Representative Becca Balint, expressed their sympathies and called for a renewed commitment to supporting Border Patrol agents. In a joint statement, they emphasized the importance of ensuring adequate resources, fair compensation, and safe working conditions for those serving on the front lines of national security.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our state and our country. We owe it to those who serve to provide them with the support they need to carry out their difficult and dangerous work,” the statement read.

The Swanton Sector, which includes Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of upstate New York, has seen an increase in activity in recent months due to a rise in illegal crossings along the northern border. This surge has placed additional pressure on Border Patrol agents, who already face challenging conditions in their day-to-day operations.

As the investigation progresses, officials are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Updates on the case are expected to be released in the coming days as investigators work to bring clarity and justice to this tragic event.
