Mysterious Duo’s Deadly Encounter: Border Patrol Agent Killed in Vermont Shootout

A routine immigration stop on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, turned deadly on January 20, 2025, when U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland, 44, was fatally shot during a confrontation with two suspects.

The suspects, Teresa Youngblut, 21, from Washington state, and Felix Bauckholt, a German national with an expired visa, had been under surveillance after hotel staff reported their suspicious behavior. Reports indicated they were seen with firearms and tactical gear.

When approached for an immigration check, Youngblut allegedly opened fire, killing Agent Maland. Bauckholt was also killed in the ensuing gunfight. Authorities later discovered alarming items in their vehicle, including foil-wrapped phones, ammunition, and night-vision equipment, raising questions about their motives.

Agent Maland, a former U.S. Air Force veteran who served during 9/11, had spent nine years with the Border Patrol. Colleagues and family mourn his loss, remembering him as a brave and dedicated protector.

The case has left investigators searching for answers: What were these two planning, and why did their paths lead to such a tragic end?
