Matthew Sluka Transfers to JMU After Leaving UNLV Due to $100K NIL Dispute

Former UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka has announced his transfer to James Madison University (JMU) following a contentious departure from the Rebels over an unresolved $100,000 NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) agreement.

Sluka, who joined UNLV as a high-profile recruit, alleged that a promised six-figure NIL deal—reportedly guaranteed verbally by a member of the coaching staff—was never honored. The quarterback departed the program mid-season, citing frustration over the unfulfilled agreement.

During his time at UNLV, Sluka showcased his skills by leading the team to a three-game winning streak, solidifying his reputation as a versatile playmaker. However, the unresolved NIL dispute overshadowed his on-field achievements and prompted his entry into the NCAA transfer portal.

At JMU, Sluka will reunite with head coach Bob Chesney, who previously coached him at Holy Cross. Under Chesney’s guidance at Holy Cross, Sluka had a record-breaking career, amassing over 5,900 passing yards, 3,500 rushing yards, and scoring 97 touchdowns.

“I’m thrilled to join JMU and reconnect with Coach Chesney, who has always believed in my abilities,” Sluka said in a statement. “This is a fresh start, and I’m ready to contribute to the team’s success.”

The move to JMU marks a new chapter for Sluka as he looks to build on his impressive college career and leave the NIL controversy behind. For JMU, Sluka’s arrival brings a proven leader and a dynamic offensive talent to the program.
